Why Annual Travel Insurance Is a Must-Have for Families

Planning some fun adventures with your kids this year? So is everyone else! The most recent US Family Travel Survey found that 85 percent of parents were “very likely” to travel with their children in the next 12 months.1 Those parents’ top priorities include having their children discover new places and new experiences; bonding and growing closer as a family; and having time to relax and unwind.

All great goals—except the “relax and unwind” part can be hard to achieve. How are you supposed to relax when you’re trapped in the airport during an 8-hour delay, or when a hurricane is barreling toward your beach house, or when your youngest comes down with a stomach bug during your cruise?

Travel insurance can’t prevent travel mishaps, but it can make a bad situation so much better. We’ll let you in on a secret: an annual travel insurance plan can be the best and cheapest way to protect your entire family, wherever you decide to wander.

How does annual travel insurance work?

An annual travel insurance plan protects all the trips you take within a 365-day span, including:

  • U.S. and international trips
  • Vacation rentals and hotel stays
  • Road trips (100+ miles away from home)
  • Cruises
  • Flights
  • Train journeys

Every AllTrips plan includes protection for covered medical emergencies and emergency transportation; lost, stolen, damaged or delayed baggage; travel delays; travel accident coverage; concierge and 24-hour assistance services; and more. Some also include trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits. Read your plan documents to make sure you understand the coverage exclusions (such as limits on trip length).

What’s the best annual travel insurance plan for families?

If you travel two or more times per year as a family, then AllTrips Premier may be your best choice. It’s our only AllTrips plan that can cover your entire household (vs. buying separate policies for each family member.) Here’s why frequent travelers love it:

  • It’s customizable. With AllTrips Premier, you can choose how much trip cancellation/interruption coverage you need: $2,000, $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 per policy, per year. The lower limit may be a good fit for families without a lot of prepaid vacation expenses, while the higher limit can ensure that your yearly travel spend is covered.
  • It’s affordable travel insurance for families. A family of two adults and four children can get an AllTrips Premier plan with $2,000 in trip cancellation for less than $125 per person. That’s a year’s worth of travel protection for just over $10 per month. (Quote retrieved in June 2023; pricing may change.)
  • It safeguards each family member’s individual travels. Mom and Dad’s anniversary weekend getaway. A mother-daughter beach trip. A child’s student exchange trip. All these adventures can be protected with one plan.
  • It protects trips you might not otherwise insure. Let’s say you’ve booked a cabin for a long weekend in the mountains. It’s not a super-expensive trip, so normally you’d skip travel insurance and shoulder the risk. With AllTrips Premier, you’re automatically protected in case of last-minute trip cancellations, trip interruptions, medical emergencies and more.
  • It may include rental car insurance. For residents of most states, AllTrips Premier includes up to $45,000 in rental car damage and theft coverage, which can save you a ton of money when you rent a car for a family vacation.
  • It’s perfect for procrastinators. If you typically wait until the last minute to buy travel insurance, then an AllTrips plan was made for you. No need to plan ahead or purchase multiple policies—buy it once, and your family’s protected for 365 days.

What does the AllTrips Premier plan include?

  • Up to $50,000 in emergency medical benefits to reimburse you for covered emergency medical expenses. This protection is crucial for international trips, because U.S. health insurance may not cover your medical expenses overseas.
  • Up to $500,000 in emergency transportation benefits, which can pay for a medically necessary evacuation for a covered illness or injury
  • From $2,000 to $15,000 per plan, per year in trip cancellation benefits, to reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel your trip due to a covered reason
  • From $2,000 to $15,000 per plan, per year in trip interruption benefits, so you can be reimbursed for the unused, non-refundable portion of your trip and for the increased transportation costs it takes for you to return home if you have to interrupt your trip to a covered reason
  • Up to $2,000 in baggage loss/damage benefits, in case your bags are stolen, or damaged or misplaced by your travel carrier
  • Up to $2,000 in baggage delay benefits to reimburse you for eligible purchases of essential items when your bags are delayed
  • Up to $1,500 in travel delay benefits to reimburse you for eligible meals, accommodations and other covered expenses during a covered delay (max $300 per day)
  • Up to $45,000 in rental car damage and theft coverage. (Rental car coverage, when purchased as part of an annual plan, is not available for residents of all states.)
  • Up to $50,000 in travel accident benefits, which can pay for covered losses due to death, loss of limb(s) or sight as a result of a covered travel accident
  • Access to 24-hour assistance for help dealing with travel emergencies
  • Concierge assistance with travel planning and arranging special experiences

With the exception of trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits, all of these benefit limits are per insured, per trip. So if, for instance, your family of three experiences a long trip delay when a snowstorm cancels your flight, you could be reimbursed up to $900 per day ($300 per insured person) for eligible expenses related to the delay.

Is an annual travel insurance plan the best choice for my family?

In general, an annual plan works well for families who take multiple trips a year, whether traveling all together or individually. But don’t take our word for it! It only takes a minute to get a quote for travel insurance and compare your costs for single-trip insurance vs. the AllTrips Premier plan. That way, you can see which is the cheapest family travel insurance option. For an accurate comparison, make sure you choose the trip cancellation/interruption benefit that best matches your planned vacation spend.

AllTrips Premier may not be the right choice for you if you’re planning only one family vacation in the next 365 days, and/or your prepaid travel expenses exceed $15,000. In those cases, you might prefer the single-trip OneTrip Prime or OneTrip Premier plan. Both cover kids 17 and under for free when they’re traveling with a parent or grandparent (not available on policies issued to Pennsylvania residents).

Also, AllTrips Premier isn’t designed to cover long-term relocations, as the maximum trip length is 90 days.
