If you’re reading this article, you’re likely filing a travel insurance claim.

That mere fact alone comes with a bit of good news and bad news.

The bad news is that something has gone awry with your scheduled trip. Maybe someone became ill before the plane even left the runway — or the plane left the runway without your bags, for example.

But the silver lining is that you have purchased a travel insurance plan. And if you’ve purchased that plan from Allianz Global Assistance, then you should prepare for a quick and convenient process to make sure that claim lands in our hands with everything it needs to be processed accordingly.

In fact, you can even submit a travel insurance claim online. So, whether you’re uploading numerous supporting documents or inputting the account information for your preferred payment method, you’ll experience a user-friendly interface that won’t leave you second-guessing the process.

Here is a step-by-step rundown of the process for filing a travel insurance claim online with Allianz Global Assistance. 1

The Online Travel Insurance Claim Process

Once you’re ready to go, you’ll want to navigate to the online claims submission page on your desktop, tablet or mobile device. Then, follow these steps:

1. Help Allianz Global Assistance look up your policy. You can do so either by logging in or entering the following details:

  • The type of plan you’re submitting a claim for (Single Trip Plan, Annual Travel, Rental Car or Event Ticket / Registration)
  • Your email address or policy number, the latter of which you’ll find in your policy documents
  • Your departure date or policy purchase date 2

2. Enter the details of the loss(es) you experienced during your trip, including the types (e.g., pre-paid, nonrefundable museum ticket) and the monetary amount of each. (Pro tip: you’ll see a running tally of your total claim amount toward the bottom of the screen.) 1

3. Next, you’ll need to upload supporting documentation, which will be determined by your type of claim. For example, if you’re submitting a trip cancellation claim, you’ll need to upload the following:

  • Trip itinerary (including traveler information, trip details, a breakdown of costs, and payment information)
  • Proof of payment, including receipts and credit card statements.
  • Penalty/refund information, which is needed to substantiate payments were nonrefundable and, if applicable, if there were any pertinent refunds or penalties.
  • Proof of incident, which could include a police report, or in the case of a medical event, a physician visit summary or other documentation (your documentation is completely confidential).
  • Letter from employer, if applicable, to verify relocation, reason for leaving, etc.

Again, this is just an example of needed documentation for a trip cancellation claim. You can find documentation needed for all types of claims here.

4. Select payment type. Finally, indicate if you prefer direct deposit, debit card or check payment. Note that it takes 7-10 days for Allianz Global Assistance to review and process your claim information. 1

After your claim has been received, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your claim number. Be sure to include this claim number on any additional documentation that you submit. You can also use your claim number online to check your claim status.

Tips for filing your travel insurance claim

Even with an easy-to-follow online solution, filing any insurance claim is hardly an everyday experience. If you need additional assistance while submitting your claim, don’t hesitate to reach out to Allianz Global Assistance’s team of travel insurance experts at 1-866-907-3045.

We even took some time to chat with our team members to learn about some of the common errors travelers make when filing claims so that we could pass them onto you. These mistakes include failing to check your travel insurance plan’s benefit limits. You’ll want to eyeball your plan’s benefit limits for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses as well as add up the value of your packing list. It might impact which travel insurance plan you pick — or whether you wear that nice dress on the plane or pack it in checked baggage. Another area that’s sometimes overlooked is submitting all required documents for a claim. As noted above, we’ve prepared lists of all the critical items for each type of claim. (See other common travel insurance claim errors here.) 3

Don’t forget, once you submit your claim, you’re going to want to check its status. There are a few ways to do so, including checking online — or even easier — using our Allyz® TravelSmart app.

When travel plans go south, you just want to be able to pick up the pieces, quickly and easily. After all, that’s why you purchased a travel insurance plan. At Allianz Global Assistance, we’ve designed our claims process to be “smooth sailing” – even if your getaway wasn’t.
