Hurricane Matthew is a dangerous storm and it has the potential to severely disrupt travel in the eastern US.
The hurricane became a known event on September 28, 2016. Customers who purchased their travel insurance policy prior to that date may be eligible for coverage under their trip cancellation/interruption or travel delay benefits, as described below.*
Customers may qualify for Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption benefits if their travel supplier experienced a complete cessation of services for 24 or more consecutive hours due to a natural disaster or severe weather. Some policies may offer coverage for customers if their home or destination is uninhabitable because of a natural disaster. For customers whose Trip Cancellation/Interruption coverage includes Extended Travel Delay coverage, they may cancel or interrupt their trip if a Travel Delay exceeds 50% of the scheduled trip. Trip Cancellation coverage may reimburse you for lost non-refundable prepaid trip expenses, and Trip Interruption may reimburse you for lost non-refundable prepaid trip expenses, plus reasonable additional transportation expenses to get home or to a place where you can continue your trip. Other benefits may also be available, depending on your plan.
If your travel insurance policy includes Travel Delay as a benefit, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for additional out of pocket meal, transportation and lodging expenses incurred as a result of a travel delay. Some policies also provide coverage for non-refundable prepaid trip expenses lost due to a travel delay.
All benefits are subject to the terms, conditions, and applicable maximum limits stated on your Letter of Confirmation (Travel Delay benefits are subject to both a per person, per day maximum limit as well as a per policy maximum limit and a minimum delay period).
Customers who have questions can refer to their policy or call us at the number on their policy. We are here 24/7/365 to answer questions and provide travel assistance.
