Eruptions of the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii have caused concern for residents of the Big Island as well as for travelers headed to the area. While much of the Big Island remains safe to visit and other Hawaiian Islands are unaffected, some areas near the volcano have been closed or evacuated. Travelers headed to Hawaii should check with their travel providers to make sure the volcano has not impacted their travel plans. Allianz Travel Insurance customers who booked their trip and purchased their insurance policy before the volcano erupted, may be covered for trip cancellations and delays caused by the volcano’s eruption. Travelers should read their policy/certificate of insurance to learn about their specific coverage and benefits. Customers who need help while traveling should contact our Travel Assistance Department at the number listed on their travel insurance policy.
The eruption of the Kilauea volcano became a known event on May 3, 2018. Customers who purchased their travel insurance policy prior to May 3, 2018 may be eligible for coverage under their trip cancellation, trip interruption or travel delay benefits, as described below.* Note that coverage under your policy may differ from what is described here—consult your policy for details of your coverage, or contact us directly.
If your travel insurance policy includes this benefit, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for additional out of pocket meals, lodging or transportation expenses incurred as a result of a travel delay of six or more consecutive hours (please note: this benefit has a per person, per day maximum as well as a policy maximum). Some policies may also provide coverage for pre-paid, non-refundable expenses lost due to Travel Delay.
You may qualify for Trip Cancellation/Interruption benefits if your travel supplier has experienced a complete cessation of services on your route for at least 12 or 24 hours (depending on the travel insurance product) due to the natural disaster. Some products may allow you to cancel or interrupt your trip if your destination becomes uninhabitable due to a natural disaster. For customers whose policy Trip Cancellation/Interruption coverage includes Extended Travel Delay coverage, they may cancel or interrupt their trip if a Travel Delay exceeds 50% of the scheduled trip. Trip Cancellation coverage may reimburse you for lost non-refundable prepaid trip expenses, and Trip Interruption may reimburse you for lost non-refundable prepaid trip expenses, plus reasonable additional transportation expenses to get home or to a place where you can continue your trip. Other benefits may also be available, depending on your plan.
