5 Awesome Midwest Beaches

Allianz - oak-beach-chicago

Even though you won't find an ocean in the Midwest, the region still boasts some of the best beaches in the United States. You'll find a mix of sandy paradises beside the Midwest's mammoth lakes, and you won't feel that you're missing out on anything by not being next to the sea. From the shores of Lake Michigan to spots along grand Lake Erie, the Midwest has something for everyone. Grab your sandals, sunglasses and other travel essentials, and get ready for unforgettable summer vacations. Take a look at these five great beaches of the American Midwest. (If beachin' is your thing, check out our more in our beach vacations guide section).

1. Oak Street Beach (Chicago, Illinois)

Chicago is a mammoth and busy town, but that doesn't mean you can't slow down and have fun here. Oak Street Beach (pictured above) is the Windy City's sun-drenched playground, and it's here that you can truly take it easy. The super-cozy sand will make you forget about those famous Florida beaches, and the action here, which includes everything from volleyball and Frisbee toss to cycling and running, is intoxicating. You can even get a massage as you look out on Lake Michigan (that's just awesome). Additionally, you'll find a variety of eateries and bars beside the beach. Grab some Chicago-style pizza and a craft beer, and let the good times roll. The Drake Hotel, a historic Chicago accommodation, overlooks the beach and can make your stay all the more epic. Even if you get sick of being a beach bum, one of the world's greatest cities awaits you. Go out and explore sights like the sky-high Willis Tower, the luxury-filled Michigan Mile, and historic Wrigley Field.

2. Clinch Park Beach (Traverse City, Michigan)

Located in the charming town of Traverse City, which is also known as the Caribbean of the North, Clinch Park Beach is arguably the best beach option along Lake Michigan. Boasting over 1,500 feet of sand, this slice of paradise offers travelers the perfect combination of relaxation and entertainment. Soak up the sun by day, then shop, eat dinner and have drinks in town by night. The beach, which features soft sand, soothing waters and plenty of picnic tables, is a delightful place to enjoy all the classic beach activities, from tossing baseball to building sandcastles and sunbathing. Sailing, swimming and fishing are also popular activities. In terms of lodging, you have ample options, from quaint bed-and-breakfast inns to chain hotels. Outside of chilling on the beach, you can also enjoy shopping and dining in the happening Fishtown District, check out historic Mission Point Lighthouse and snap photos of the City Opera House. Don't forget to run up and down the Sleeping Bear Dunes while you're here too.

3. Huntington Beach (Cleveland, Ohio)

Allianz - Cleveland Beach

Poised on the shores of Lake Erie, Huntington Beach represents a getaway from the big city — within the big city. Its ice cream stand, picnic shelters and spacious sand area allow for true relaxation and enjoyment. After spending a few days here, you'll understand why Huntington Beach is considered one of the best freshwater beaches in the nation. Its location just below a forested bluff is postcard-worthy, and the hiking trails adjacent to the beach make for a good workout. Even better, with Cleveland at your doorstep, you can stay at luxury hotels or budget motels, and enjoy activities like watching a Cleveland Indians baseball game at Progressive Field, touring the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, and eating everything from pho to gyros.

4. Lake Calhoun North Beach (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

The city of Minneapolis has a total of 12 beaches in its park system, but it's the Lake Calhoun North Beach that truly stands out. Lake Calhoun is the city's largest lake and offers great views of the metropolis. Minneapolis may be known for chilly winters, but a summer trip here will make you forget all about such coldness, especially as you test your swimming skills, cycle along the bike path and simply sunbathe. Outside of beach fun, you can stroll through the Minneapolis Institute of Art, be amazed by the granite-and-limestone Stone Arch Bridge and shop until you drop at the Mall of America. Well-known hotels, like a Marriot and Hilton, are right near the lake, and excellent dining spots, such as Tin Fish, are within a short distance too.

5. Big Bay Beach (Madeline Island, Wisconsin)

Allianz - Lake Superior

This wouldn't be a list without a spot along Lake Superior. Featuring 1.5 miles of pristine sand, a nice campground area and an awesome boardwalk, Big Bay Beach on Madeline Island is one spot where you can leave your worries at home. In addition, the island is famous for its nature trails and is one of the best places in the Midwest to view wildlife. Madeline Island is the southernmost of the gorgeous Apostle Islands and showcases lush forests beside unspoiled beaches. If you are a nature lover, this may be the best option in the Midwest. And if you need to return to civilization, La Pointe, Wisconsin, a town known for its laid-back cafes, golfing, and boutiques, is just seven miles away.
