How to Navigate an Emergency Medical Situation Overseas

A medical emergency abroad is always a frightening and stressful situation. But there’s a lot you can do before your trip to be better prepared, and steps you can take during the emergency to handle the situation effectively.

What to do before you travel

Purchase travel insurance. You should know that your domestic health insurance policy, including Medicare, may not fully cover you abroad. Health care providers overseas also often require upfront payment for medical services. And emergency medical evacuation from remote areas can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“Costs increase when the patient being evacuated is critically ill or needs complex infection control measures.” the Centers for Disease Control writes. “In such cases, medevac insurance covers the cost of transportation, including transportation to another country if necessary.”

An Allianz Travel Insurance plan with emergency medical benefits can provide reimbursement for covered emergency medical care and transportation. You can purchase protection for a single trip, or protect a year’s worth of adventures with an annual plan.

Don’t think you can go without travel insurance. It can save you from major financial losses.

Complete the personal information page on the inside of your passport. This can help ID you in case of emergency.

Know where to go for help and safety. Our Allyz® app provides local emergency numbers, medical translation services and the GPS locations of medical facilities and pharmacies.

You should also know the location of the nearest U.S. embassy. Sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program — a free service by the Bureau of Consular Affairs in the Department of State. STEP, in addition to other services, will help family and friends get in touch with you in an emergency.

Take extra precautions if you have a pre-existing condition. Carry a letter from your doctor describing the condition and medications you take. Travel with enough medication to last for longer than your trip, in case you experience an emergency or other delay.

What to do during an emergency

Call the emergency number in your country for assistance. Our Allyz® app provides local emergency numbers.

Contact your travel insurance provider before receiving healthcare coverage. Your travel insurance provider or consulate can help with transfer of funds from family and friends in the U.S. to help pay for treatment and can notify family and friends of your emergency.

Be prepared to pay upfront. Many health facilities abroad expect payment before services. Travel insurance can often reimburse expenses or negotiate payment.

Wherever you roam, don’t forget to protect yourself with travel insurance. Get a quote and find the right plan for your trip.
