Al continues to bring more convenience to daily living. We ask AI assistants to add appointments to our digital calendars, control our thermostats and to scour the internet to answer any query at a whim.  AI assistants send texts via voice command when our fingers are otherwise occupied, and update us on the latest news when with AI overviews.

Travel is yet another aspect of our lives to which AI brings more ease and convenience. Here’s how you can leverage AI tools while planning and embarking on your next trip. AI can make trip planning a breeze, from booking airfare, to communicating via live translation and scheduling your next dinner reservations.

AI for trip planning

Not sure where to go? Or, do you have a destination in mind, but need some ideas on what to do? AI is ideal for helping you choose destinations based on your preferences and crafting itineraries. You can use more generalized AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, for trip planning. But if you need more specificity, here’s a few recommendations for AI chatbots optimized for travel:

Layla pulls from “a vast mix of travel info, tips, trends and general knowledge from all over the internet, books, articles and more,” to plan the perfect trip, Layla says.  Just let her know when you want to go, the vibe you want and your price range. Layla will generate a tailored itinerary for every day of your trip, and book recommended accommodations, flights and airport transfers.

Roadtrippers is ideal for adventurers who prefer exploring at their own pace via car or RV. The AI “includes real-time traffic and air-quality information along with route planning,” writes The New York Times.

Plug in details such as your start and end points, budget and desired activities, for Roadtrippers to plan your trip. Let Roadtrippers know what type of stops are ideal, including options like national parks and movie scene locations. Choose to go fast or take your time by taking a scenic route away from major highways.

Mindtrip gives users more flexibility, as opposed to being more geared toward generating suggestions. For example, Mindtrip generates scrollable lists of hotel properties on a map of your destinations, that you can click on for more details, pictures and links to book.

Similar travel AIs can also generate itineraries based on your activity preferences. Take Mindtrip’s quiz to find your “travel type” and recommended search queries to get the most out of your next adventure.

Tried and true digital travel brands such as Tripadvisor and Expedia “are now using AI generated vacation builders,” The New York Times writes.

AI for booking flights and accommodations

Sophisticated AI with up to date flight and hotel information and the ability to adjust your plans as needed:

Flight Deals is a new AI search tool by Google Flights. Flight Deals is meant for travelers who are looking for the best flight deals, but don’t want to put a lot of effort into searching.

“Instead of playing with different dates, destinations and filters to uncover the best deals, you can just describe when, where and how you’d like to travel — as though you’re talking to a friend — and Flight Deals will take care of the rest,” writes Google.

Romie by Expedia allows you to find, compare and book hotels. Romie provides human customer service for travel snags and more complex bookings. You can also handle schedule changes, cancellations and air credit redemption through the AI.

Navan was created for corporate travel. The AI can help you manage expense reporting and keep track of expense reporting policies for your company. Navan also automates bookings and updates itineraries with the latest flight information.

Language translation

Translation AI to help you communicate in real time and translate text:

Google Translate has long been known as a reliable option for translation in real time. It is also operational offline, translates texts via camera and offers web translation.

DeepL specializes in live and virtual translation and is known for natural, accurate and precise translations.

Microsoft Translator is recommended for group conversations and business use.

Issues to watch out for

While there’s no doubting AI’s usefulness, the technology still has bugs to work out. AI trip planners have been known to not precisely execute commands, or to provide inaccurate information. That’s why it’s important to double check your booking and travel plans when using AI. But the technology is steadily improving, and can become more in tune with your preferences with use.

Travel insurance and AI

Whether you search the web yourself for the best deals, or let AI do all the work,  it’s important to protect your financial investment with travel insurance. An Allianz Travel Insurance plan with trip cancellation and interruption benefits can reimburse certain non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel or cut short your trip for a covered reason.

Let’s say you’re diagnosed with the flu the day before your flight to Cancun and your doctor advises you not to travel – but your resort reservations are non-refundable. If your Allianz Travel Insurance plan has trip cancellation benefits, you could be reimbursed for certain non-refundable expenses, such as non-refundable reservations.

Keep in mind that travel insurance can’t protect you in the event that AI provides you with misleading information impacting your trip — so be sure to double-check information.
