Quick: When you think of a romantic travel destination, what do you picture?
There’s nothing wrong with any of these... but there’s also nothing that will make your sweetheart say, “How did you ever find this place?!” If you really want to surprise your loved one, we have a few ideas for romantic travel destinations they’ll never forget.
Don’t go for the obvious. Some people love wine, roses, and chocolate. Some people would rather have seltzer, lilies, and Skittles. Know your partner’s likes and dislikes. If you don’t know, do some research by asking their family or friends.
Don’t go for broke. You’d love to delight your partner with a stay at a luxury resort in Tulum. But if that means coming up short on your rent, don’t do it. A romantic trip today isn’t worth financial pain tomorrow. Try our tips for planning a romantic getaway on a budget.
Do splurge on accommodations. Book the best lodging your budget allows. Trust us: Even if you’ve planned the most romantic day ever, coming back to a dumpy hotel will kill the mood quicker than you can say, “What’s that stain?”
Do DIY. You could pay the B&B $30 to scatter rose petals on the bed... or you could do it yourself. You could pay $100 for the hotel picnic basket of wine and cheese... or you could bring one along with you.
Don’t skip the travel insurance. An emergency cancellation, a delayed flight, a missing suitcase, a sudden illness. These common travel mishaps can ruin your romantic travel plans in a heartbeat.... unless you have travel protection. Allianz Travel Insurance is here to save your trip when things go wrong.
If your main worry is losing your prepaid trip costs due to a last-minute cancellation, consider the OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan. If you want more robust coverage, including emergency medical benefits, get our most popular plan: OneTrip Prime.

There’s something indescribably romantic about witnessing a special event together—one that fills you both with awe. Visit Yosemite National Park in February for a chance to see the firefall: the moment when the setting sun turns Horsetail Falls into a cascade the color of flame. Or go to Tenerife’s Teide National Park in August to watch the Perseid meteors streak across the sky.
Does your loved one get a little thrill out of the supernatural? There are plenty of romantic travel destinations with a haunted history. Take a ghost tour in Boston, New Orleans, or Gettysburg. Or head out west to stay in a haunted hotel. Or spend the weekend in Salem, Massachusetts, home to the real-life horror story of the Salem Witch Trials.
If your sweetie has seen “The Notebook” 100 times, there’s no more romantic trip idea than heading to Charleston for a tour of the movie locations.1 You can visit the theater where Noah and Allie had their first date (just no dancing in the street, please); tour the mansion that stood in for Allie’s family’s summer home; and even row out onto the lake at Cypress Gardens, just like the lovers did.
Or, if you’d rather laugh than cry, spend a glorious day in New York City visiting the places where “When Harry Met Sally” was filmed: Washington Square Park, the Central Park Boathouse, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and last but not least, Katz’s Delicatessen.2 You know what to say when the server asks for your order!
Lightning crashes. Thunder roars. Is there anything more romantic than weathering a storm with your loved one? (from a safe and snuggly location, of course). Stay at the Timber Cove Resort in Mendocino, California, and watch the wild waves during storm season. Or book a stay at The Lightning Field, a work of land art by the American sculptor Walter De Maria. It’s a field of 400 polished lightning rods in the high desert of western New Mexico. (Just don’t plan a couple’s photoshoot; electronic devices and photography are prohibited.)
Grab your hat and saddle up, because you’re heading out west for your romantic getaway. Many dude ranches offer adults-only vacations where you can ride horses, rope cattle, hunt, fly-fish, and hike. You don’t have to rough it, though! Larger ranches often have live music and dancing, spa services and massages.
Does your loved one have a soft spot for all creatures great and small? Search for a romantic farm stay near you. A farm stay is a vacation rental on a working farm or ranch that allows you to take part in the day’s activities. You might help feed the goats, brush the horses, pick some apples, or collect the eggs.
Just do your homework before you book. Sometimes, guests find that their farm stay is a little more rustic than they’d like. If you’d rather not be roused by a rooster at sunrise or smell a pile of manure, look for stays that are focused more on hospitality than the everyday business of farming.
Glorious forests. Quaint covered bridges. Picture-perfect small towns. Is there anything more romantic than autumn in New England?
Be aware that this is a trip you’ll have to plan well in advance. By midsummer, hotels and B&Bs will be fully booked for peak foliage season. Here’s a tip from New England Inns & Resorts: “Midweek is the time to hop between towns — you'll find more inns and resorts willing to bend their two- or three-night minimum stay policies to fill in a Tuesday or Wednesday night.”3
Keep in mind, too, that the northeast U.S. isn’t the only place to see gorgeous fall color. The southeastern and western states have a lot to offer, too. Take a look at our best leaf-peeping trips by region.
What’s the first thing you should do after booking your romantic getaway? Buy travel insurance, of course! Find out why 70 million American travelers each year trust Allianz Travel Insurance to protect their most important trips. Get a quote.
