Travel Insurance for Students

It seems like just yesterday you were helping your child blow out birthday candles. And now you're putting your son or daughter on a plane — without you — for the first time. That's when the what-ifs start:

  • What if your daughter’s suitcase vanishes from the hotel baggage room?
  • What if your adventurous twins both lose their passports?
  • What if your daughter falls ill in a remote beach town?
  • What if your son races his friends up a flight of stairs and fractures his ankle?

Travel Insurance is the Cure for the What-Ifs

Allianz Global Assistance is there when you can't be. We offer travel insurance plans that are designed to protect your young adventurer. And our team of travel specialists work around the clock to assist your child at any time. Here are just a few ways that travel insurance can help:

  • If your daughter’s suitcase is stolen, baggage benefits can help reimburse her for the value of the contents, up to the limit of the policy.
  • If your children’s passports are stolen, travel delay benefits can reimburse them for covered delays in travel, and our hotline assistance team can help them contact the nearest embassy.
  • If your daughter suffers a covered illness when she’s many miles from the nearest hospital, emergency medical transportation benefits can cover transport to the nearest appropriate medical facility.
  • If your son fractures his ankle, our assistance team will tell him where the nearest qualified medical facility is located. Emergency medical benefits can cover the cost of treatment for covered injuries sustained while traveling.

What to Look for in a Travel Insurance Plan for Your Student

For students traveling internationally, the most important part of a travel insurance plan is primary emergency medical benefits. Many primary healthcare providers do not extend coverage outside of the United States — and even if your child is covered, he or she may still have to file a claim with your insurer and pay the deductible. Another crucial inclusion: emergency medical transportation benefits, which can cover the often-exorbitant costs of medical evacuation for a covered illness or injury that occurs while traveling.

Allianz Global Assistance offers three travel insurance plans that include primary emergency medical benefits: the OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan, the OneTrip Prime Plan and the OneTrip Premier Plan. Choosing one of our plans with primary medical benefits allows you to file your claim with us first to seek reimbursement. We can often arrange advance payments, if necessary, to allow for covered emergency treatments. Here is a brief summary of these travel insurance plans.

1. OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan

The OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan is flexible and affordable travel insurance that includes wide-ranging coverage for mishaps like lost baggage, covered missed connections and covered trip delays. The OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan includes up to $50,000 in emergency medical benefits in case a traveler suffers a covered illness or injury during their trip. This plan also includes up to $250,000 in medical evacuation benefits.

It does not, however, include trip cancellation/trip interruption coverage, so it’s best for trips with few pre-paid expenses. That means the OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan is perfect for free-spirited students who are traveling without a fixed itinerary. This plan can also be extended during the trip for up to an additional 30 days, a feature not available in our other plans, to cover a maximum of 180 days. Restrictions apply, so be sure to read your policy or call us to see if your trip is eligible for an extension of coverage.

2. OneTrip Prime Plan

Students lead unpredictable lives, and sometimes plans change at the drop of a hat. Unlike the OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan, the OneTrip Prime Plan includes trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits, which can reimburse nonrefundable prepaid trip expenses when a trip’s canceled for a covered reason. So if your student’s trip abroad is derailed by a covered illness or injury, a covered family emergency or other covered reasons, the OneTrip Prime Plan can prevent you from losing the money you invested. Trip interruption benefits can also cover the increased transportation costs for your student to return home early due to a covered reason.

The OneTrip Prime Plan from Allianz Global Assistance includes emergency medical benefits up to $50,000 and emergency medical transportation benefits up to $500,000. It also includes luggage, missed connection and travel delay benefits.

3. OneTrip Premier Plan

The OneTrip Premier Plan doubles most of the OneTrip Prime Plan's post-departure benefits: up to $50,000 in emergency medical benefits and up to $1 million in emergency medical transportation benefits. The OneTrip Premier Plan includes travel delay benefits up to $1,600, baggage loss or damage up to $2,000, baggage delay up to $600, and missed connection benefits up to $1,600.
