Did you take a Coolcation last year? In 2026, there’s a new buzzword  — try a calming Hushpitality stay.

A new year brings new adventures! From Set-jetting to the windswept moorlands of Yorkshire from scenes in the upcoming Wuthering Heights film adaptation, to taking a digital detox at a luxury resort in Yucatan — there’s a trip for everyone!

Here are the top travel trends that are already gaining steam for 2026.

Hushpitality brings peaceful vibes and relaxation

“For many Americans, their smartphone is the last thing they see at night and the first thing they see in the morning,” writes YouGov.

Most Americans, 57 percent, spend at least five hours a day on their smartphone, and more than half, 53 percent want to reduce their screentime, YouGov data shows.

An increasing desire to unplug, paired with wanderlust, has brought rise to “hushpitality” trips. Travelers seeking a digital detox are booking remote, offline cabins, campsites and yurts, without a phone or laptop in sight. The accommodations are distinctly analog, granting a reprieve from the digital world.

AI is taking the work out of planning trips

Are you someone who gets overwhelmed by trip planning? For every traveler who enjoys scouring the web for deals and the perfect trip itinerary, there's someone who would rather skip the logistics.

More travellers are taking a hands off approach to trip planning and using generative to plan and book trips, a survey by Amadeus Research shows. Major travel sites such as Booking.com and Expedia “are now using AI generated vacation builders,” The New York Times writes.

AI is undoubtedly helpful, but travellers should use these tools mindfully. Sustainability experts fear that AI generated itineraries could lead to more overtourism, due to the popularity of frequently suggested destinations.

Off-grid adventures instead of over-touristed spots

Though renowned destinations continue to see big crowds, the number of travelers planning journeys off-the-beaten path is surging. Travelers are eschewing Instagram perfect hotspots in favor of less known and quieter locales.

“There's a growing appetite for adventure, whether that’s seeking out authentic homestays in Nepal, visiting lesser-known pockets of Italy or simply any under-touristed region with a strong sense of place,” writes the BBC.

Road trips are king this year

Get your kicks on Route 66! Classic American road trips are expected to surge in popularity in 2026. A sense of nostalgia in the lead up to the 250th anniversary of the U.S., and the freedom of hitting the open road in your own car, is predicted to drive greater interest in storied road trips.

More than 70 percent of travelers in the U.S. plan to drive instead of fly on their next vacation, according to a survey by Hilton. Trips that bring travelers closer to nature, such as glamping, are popular. Data from Airbnb shows a 35 percent increase in searches on the company’s site for accommodations near national parks for 2026.

Books and movie sets inspire jetsetting

Do you love searching #Booktok for your next riveting read? Have you ever daydreamed about the landscapes in your favorite movies or TV shows? If so, then you’re not alone. Literary travel and trips inspired by TV and movies, or set-jetting, is popular.

Set-jetting and literary travel are often combined, as more of our favorite stories are adapted for film and television. Tourists are flocking to Cornwall, England where the new Harry Potter TV series is being filmed. Year after year, fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and films visit the stunning natural landscapes of New Zealand that brought Middle Earth to life.

Travel insurance for peace of mind

Purchasing travel insurance — especially for trips abroad — is a wise investment. Travel insurance may prevent major financial losses.

Medical emergencies

You should know that your domestic health insurance policy may not fully protect you if you experience a medical emergency abroad. Also, many healthcare providers abroad require payment ahead of treatment.

An Allianz Travel Insurance plan may help fill health insurance gaps during international trips. Our emergency medical benefits can reimburse certain non-refundable costs if you experience a covered medical emergency.

Canceled plans

An Allianz Travel Insurance plan with trip cancellation and interruption benefits can offer reimbursement for certain non-refundable costs, such as reservations and airfare, if you need to cancel your trip or cut it short due to a reason included in your policy.

Let’s say you booked an off-grid, guide-led group backpacking trip in Thailand, and paid a non-refundable deposit. The week of your trip, you are diagnosed with the flu and advised by your doctor not to travel. Your Allianz Travel Insurance plan with trip cancellation benefits could help you recover your non-refundable trip costs up to your plan’s coverage limit, and allow you to postpone your trip for another time.
