Going through airport security checks are necessary to keep us safe, even though the process can be somewhat annoying. How you choose to pack, and what you wear, can make a big difference in how smoothly the security check in process goes.
No one wants to deal with the inconvenience or embarrassment of holding up the airport security line while unlacing knee-high boots. Check out our list of what to wear and how you should pack, to get through airport security without a hassle.
We’ve curated the best outfit, focused on comfort and ease.
Taking your shoes on and off while carrying a purse, laptop bag or other personal item can be cumbersome. If you are flying domestic, wear slip-on shoes, or shoes that lace up easily, to get through the line quickly.
However, if you are flying internationally, remember that many countries don’t require shoe inspections at airports. “It’s best to look up the rules in advance when traveling internationally or wait until you are asked to remove your shoes to take them off,” writes Huffpost, “Otherwise, you may hold up the line and make the process longer than it needs to be.
If you are wearing sandals in the summer, or prefer to not wear socks with slip-ons, be sure to pack a pair for when you have to take off your shoes.
Remove your coat or jacket before you get to the security check point. Consider bringing a carry-on bag with room for you to place your coat in your bag. If you don’t have room in a bag, place your coat in a bin.
If you are too hot or cold, you may be more likely to feel stressed while going through the security process. “If you wear a light sweater or sweatshirt without zippers, you can usually keep it on through security,” Huffpost writes.
Don’t give yourself anxiety, hold up the line or leave anything behind. Here are our recommendations for what not to wear when going through airport security:
If you’re flying within the U.S., it’s best to avoid shoes with buckles, snaps, zippers or otherwise cumbersome fastenings. You want to make getting your shoes into a bin a breeze.
Don’t wear high heels. While you may want to look your best, it can be uncomfortable moving through airport security in high heels. Minimize stress by prioritizing comfort.
Avoid unnecessarily wearing metallic objects. Leave the sparkly clothing, dangly jewelry, cufflinks, tie pins and piercings at home. Metals can slow you down when getting through security, due to the need for closer inspections.
Make your trip through the airport security line easy with our tips on how to pack your items for easy scanning.
Remember to have your clear plastic bag of 3.4 oz. liquid containers out and ready to scan separately from your other items. Don’t wait until you are in the line to dig your liquids out from your carry on.
Keep your liquids in an easily accessible front or top outside pocket, instead of at the bottom or center of your carryon or personal item, so that you can get to your items faster. Airports in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Europe require liquids to be scanned separately.
To ensure that you get through airport security quickly, use packing cubes to separate clothes from electronics and toiletries, so that agents can easily inspect your bag if needed. Neatly packing your bag may also help prevent manual baggage inspections.
“Disorganized bags are another major culprit behind screening delays,” writes Dollar Flight Club, “Tangled cables, loose items, and cluttered compartments make it harder for TSA agents to get a clear X-ray view, often leading to manual inspections.”
Electronics such as tablets and laptops must be placed in bins to scan separately. You don’t want to have to dig through your bag to get to your laptop or charger. Be sure to keep your laptop and charger in an easily accessible compartment.
If your bag is nearly bursting at the seams, it makes it harder for agents to adequately view the contents with x-ray. “While cramming everything into your carry-on might save on baggage fees, it can cost you valuable time at security,” writes Dollar Flight Club.
Check official government aviation pages for carryon items that are banned in the U.S. and at connecting international airports and destinations. Knowing the rules prevents manual inspections and saves valuable time.
Travel insurance is an essential item to bring along on any trip. You should know that your domestic health insurance policy may not fully protect you if you experience a medical emergency abroad. Also, many healthcare providers abroad require payment ahead of treatment. An Allianz Travel Insurance plan with emergency medical benefits can reimburse certain non-refundable costs if you experience a covered medical emergency.
Allianz Travel Insurance plans with trip cancellation and interruption benefits can also reimburse certain non-refundable costs, such as reservations and airfare, if your trip is canceled or cut short due to a reason included in your policy.
