Keys? Check. Wallet? Check. Bag? Check. You’re almost ready to go. But don’t take off on your epic road trip just yet. Before you head out and even better, while you pack, check out some of our packing lists for travelling with kids and dogs and essentials for staying safe. There’s a packing list for every drive, depending on the length and who you have on the road for company.
Comfy clothes that stay in the car. A hoodie and a pair of sweats are good ideas for summer road trips, when the car AC can get a little frosty and evening temperatures dip. Littles can get especially fussy due to sensory changes such as temperature fluctuations.
A snuggly neck pillow designed for car seats is a must for toddlers who drift to sleep.
Adjustable sunshades can help protect sensitive young eyes.
A pillow and blanket are a good idea for older kids who have outgrown their car seats but will be riding along on nighttime drives.
Baby wipes and hand sanitizer are essential for taking care of those inevitable messes.
A favorite toy or stuffed animal can help your young child feel grounded, safe and comfortable.
Keep their favorite snacks on hand. Finger foods such as animal crackers, grape tomatoes, baby carrots and Goldfish crackers minimize mess.
Activities tied to your trip can keep kids entertained on the drive and get them excited about the trip. The Sticker Road Trips 50 States book is a great way for your kids to learn about each state as you cross over state lines. The book includes facts and pictures from each state as well as a collection of stickers to show where you’ve been. Your kids will be excited about picking their favorite places to stop in each state and marking them.
There are quite a few road-trip themed sticker books out there, including the License Plate Travel Book, My First Road Trip Sticker Book, and the Travel Awaits Sticker Book. The Are We There Yet travel pack for kids includes 45 pages of crosswords, bingo, coloring, tik tac toe, car counts and more. Classics such as coloring books are also good ideas.
In moderation, digital entertainment is a great idea. A charged tablet with your child’s favorite movies or games downloaded in case you lose signal is another great idea. And check out this list of 25 audio books the whole family can tune into on the road. The PBS mobile app also has a collection of educational games and shows that can keep your child occupied for hours.
Pack the best car restraint for your pup. Your pet should be safely restrained while you drive. Car seat belts and air bags aren’t created with animal safety needs in mind. Luckily, there’s a number of car restraint options for your pet to stay protected and ride comfortably.
Safety harnesses specifically designed for dogs offer better protection than seatbelts and your dog may not mind them. But these harnesses can limit your dog’s movement, which some pups don’t like. Some animals may prefer to ride in crates or kennels with safety attachment points, because they can sit up and recline comfortably.
Bring a digital copy of your pet’s medical and vaccination records and make sure they are wearing a snug collar and tags with their name and your contact information.
Don’t forget backups of items used daily, which includes an extra collar and leashes in case one breaks, doggy waste bags, portable bowls and an emergency stash of bottled water.
A favorite chew, ball or stuffed animal can help your pet feel calm in the car and if you leave them at the hotel for a little bit. An old shirt of yours or something else that smells like you can also help them stay mellow.
Snacks, snacks and more snacks! Just like the kids, the doggos love to have their favorite snacks on board.
Assemble a car emergency kit to include jumper cables, flashlight and flares, a spare cell phone charger and water. If you are traveling during the winter, your kit should also have a snow shovel, broom and ice scraper, and sand or kitty litter for traction in case your car gets stuck in snow.
Make a medication checklist for all children, adults and pets on the journey and don’t forget to include yourself! It’s so easy to forget things and these are the essentials you don’t want to miss.
