How to Live Like a Local Abroad

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things,” renowned American writer Henry Miller mused on the benefits of travel. He would probably agree that a good way to experience fresh perspectives during your globetrotting would be to live like the locals.

Eat what, and how, they eat: If buying produce and haggling at open air markets is common, do that. Observe how the locals commute. Is the city walkable? Does bus or light rail link bucolic villages to urban areas? If yes, then ditch the car. And don’t simply visit famed landmarks and tourist attractions, try finding the offbeat and unusual; a true local treasure.

The following is more advice from us on how to live like a local in your destination. When in Rome, right?

Wake up early

“I’ve had some of my most meaningful travel experiences before 9 a.m. Make the effort to roll out of bed earlier and you will, too.” writes travel blogger Allyson Dobberteen.

Because many people have day jobs, riding the train during rush hour or standing in the morning queue at the coffee shop, will evoke a sense of local atmosphere, she adds.

Make some observations. What do the locals eat for breakfast? How do they take their coffee, or do they instead get a pick-me-up from matcha or a sweet, masala chai? Soak it all up.

Walk city parks

Visit the nearest city park during peak leisure hours – think morning exercise or post-work strolls. Experience local treats (Gelato anyone?) from food carts shaded by trees. Find the popular paths for running and cycling, or a perfect, musical stream by which to read a book. Observe how people move together, whether it’s spirited games of futbol and rugby or a calming taijiquan meditation.

While you’re there, pay attention to fliers that may announce local outdoor festivals and shows that you may want to leave some flexibility in your plans to enjoy. You never know what you’ll find!

Read local

Along the lines of keeping an eye out for fliers and announcements, is checking out local periodicals and magazines. Feature stories by local writers can give travelers a unique look at culture and happenings. If you are learning a foreign language, local media can help improve your skills.  And reading op-eds and opinion pages open the mind to local thoughts on key issues.

Be aware

You are living as the locals do, but your get-away is far from your home base. Be sure to take extra precautions on your trip with Allianz Travel Insurance. And keep in mind locals know key information such as the location of the nearest medical facilities, just as you do in your hometown. Get these important details and access to 24-hour assistance with the Allyz® mobile app for Android and Apple. Don’t leave home without it.

Best kept secrets

Talk to people. I know, an obvious tip, but one that can’t be overstated. Converse in the pub, grocery store, that park you are planning to visit the next day. Ask about nearby hangouts, natural landscapes and hole-in-the-wall restaurants only a local would know.

Live local, work local

If you are planning an extended trip, living with family or working abroad, will give you the most immersive experience. Be brave – take this chance to learn the language, customs and traditions of your gracious hosts. Working as an Au Pair is a tried-and-true option. If you possess other sought-after skills or trades, maybe a work-exchange program is for you. To give back to the community that welcomed you, volunteer.

Become a regular

You may be in a hurry to hit as many excursions as possible on your list, but slow down a bit. There are advantages to maintaining a presence at a local haunt. If baristas, bartenders and fellow patrons know your name, you’re sure to get great insight on what is happening around town and perhaps build lasting friendships. This suggestion is up there with, talk to people.

Keep your mind on soaking in the local flavor, not worrying about potential mishaps. Get a quote to see how Allianz Travel Insurance can help you on your next adventure.
