White powder, cozy lodges, stunning views… A ski vacation is an unforgettable experience, whether you prefer sipping hot chocolate or braving black diamonds.

Just don't get snowed under by unexpected slope conditions! Protect yourself from disaster—like the family whose essentials were replaced after their luggage arrived in Hawaii as they were landing in Vail. Or the teenager whose need for speed led to a free ride on a medevac helicopter. Or the couple who got their extra hotel nights and meals reimbursed after a blizzard grounded all airplanes.

How did they save their vacations? They purchased Allianz Travel Insurance for their ski trip.

You're covered on and off the mountain.

Having Allianz Travel Insurance for your ski trip is like having your very own ski patrol. Our OneTrip Prime Plan gives you:

  • 24/7 travel assistance
  • Emergency medical transportation
  • Baggage loss/damage protection
  • Trip cancellation, trip interruption, and more

Compare travel insurance plans and learn what's covered so you can choose the right plan for your trip.

Why is it crucial for skiers to pack travel insurance?

Ski trips are really expensive.

In fact, “a day on the slopes for a family runs alarmingly close to a month’s rent,” Outside magazine reports. Because of the rise in season passes and dynamic pricing, which raises rates during high-demand periods, the cost of skiing has hit new peaks. To ski for just one day at Vail, for instance, a family of four might spend $1,341 for their lift tickets, gear rental, gas, parking and lunch.1

Smaller resorts can be more reasonable, but still not cheap. A day of skiing for a family of four at the Summit at Snoqualmie, an hour outside of Seattle, would cost about $828. Add airfare and lodging for a multi-day trip, and you’ll probably pay thousands for your family ski vacation. If you have to make a last-minute trip cancellation, you could lose a lot of money. But not if you plan ahead with travel insurance for your ski vacation!

Trip cancellation benefits can reimburse you for your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs when you have to cancel your travel plans for a covered reason. OneTrip Prime even covers children 17 and under for free when they’re traveling with a parent or grandparent (not available on policies issued to Pennsylvania residents).

Travel insurance can protect your gear, too.

Traveling with skis, snowboards, boots, goggles, and other necessities for winter sports? If your possessions are lost, damaged, or stolen while you are on your trip, your baggage benefits can pay you the cost to repair or replace them, or their actual cash value, whichever is lower.

Just be aware that maximum limits apply, including limits for high-value items, and you must provide original receipts for the lost items. If you don’t have receipts, insurance can cover up to 75% of the actual cash value. Skis and snowboards are only covered while they’re checked with a travel carrier.

If your baggage gets delayed en route to your vacation, the baggage delay benefit can reimburse you for essential items needed for your ski trip — including the purchase or rental of gear (up to the max limits specified in your plan.)

Ski and snowboard accidents happen—a lot.

In the U.S., ski and snowboard accidents send more than 66,000 people to the hospital in a year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.2 An average of 42 skiers and snowboarders experience catastrophic injuries—so severe that they are life-altering—every year.3

But wait: Won’t your health insurance cover a helicopter ride to the nearest hospital if you get hurt on the slopes? Not necessarily. Outside the United States, American travelers often have to pay out of pocket for emergency medical care. Even in the U.S., insurance companies may only cover an air ambulance that’s in their network, and the patient may still be responsible for a hefty deductible.4

Allianz Travel Insurance plans with emergency transportation benefits can pay for (up to the maximum limit in your plan):

  • Transporting you to the nearest appropriate hospital if local medical facilities can’t provide appropriate treatment
  • Transporting a family member to your bedside, if you’ll be hospitalized for more than 48 hours during your trip
  • Having your dependent travel companions safely transported home
  • Your medical repatriation, so you can continue your recovery at home

All with no deductible!

Please note: Travel insurance does not cover losses resulting from extreme sports, including skiing or snowboarding outside marked trails, or in an area accessed by helicopter.

Winter weather is unpredictable.

Two feet of fresh powder = the perfect ski vacation. A blizzard that closes the airport = not so great for your ski vacation.

A travel insurance policy from Allianz Global Assistance can cover trip cancellations, interruptions, and delays due to severe weather. And if your plan includes SmartBenefits®, you can opt to receive a fixed inconvenience payment of $100 per insured person, per day, for a covered travel delay or baggage delay (up to the maximum no-receipts limit). No receipts required — just proof of a covered delay.

What if the weather is unseasonably warm, and you can’t ski because the snow has melted? That would be a bummer, but it’s not covered by travel insurance.

Sometimes, you just need a little help.
