Summer is over, the kids are back in school, but do you still find yourself bitten by the travel bug? Luckily, there are plenty of long weekends ahead for short family getaways. Since your mini vacation will fall outside of the main tourist season, you may find cheaper accommodations and activities. Check out our list of major cities for the best low-cost activities for families for your next fall family getaway.

Baltimore, Maryland

The Inner Harbor is a great choice for adventurous kids and adults who are lovers of history. The whole family will love exploring the USS Constellation, the last all-sail warship operated by the U.S. Navy. Other ships open for tours with inexpensive admission are the submarine USS Torsk, Lightship Chesapeake, USCG Cutter, and a historic lighthouse.

Amazing green spaces and parks surround the Inner Harbor. If you’re coming in September, catch the tail end of operating season for the Walter Sondheim Fountain. Kids love playing in this large splash pad while adults take in views of the harbor. Let the kids play at the uniquely landscaped playground at Rash Field Park, or get a free skate lesson at Jake’s Skatepark.

Outside of the Harbor, sports lovers should catch a baseball game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Baltimore also offers plenty of low-cost and free indoor activities. Visit the American Visionary Art Museum and the Walters Art Museum.

Washington D.C.

Our nation’s capital is full of low-cost and free adventures. The Smithsonian National Zoo has free admission, a focus on conservation and is consistently ranked among the best zoos in the world. And what kid doesn’t love a zoo!

Explore the Smithsonian complex, the largest museum complex in the world. The Air and Space Museum and the African American History and Culture Museum are highly interactive and popular with families. “Walking on other Worlds” is an exhibition that takes visitors of The Air and Space Museum through a tour of seven different worlds. The experience is fully immersive thanks to a nearly 360-degree CGI screen and audio. Discover the cultural dance form of stepping and learn a few moves from the Step Afrika! Dance company at the African American History Museum.

If you and the kids adore the outdoors, walk the grounds of the U.S. Botanic Garden and the National Arboretum. Visit the monuments or ride bikes through West Potomac Park.

San Diego, California

Known for its temperate year-round weather, San Diego is the perfect West Coast destination for a fall family getaway. Head to the city’s numerous beaches, known as some of the best in the nation. If the weather has gotten too cold to swim or wade, hang out on the sand building castles, picnicking or exploring the Mission Beach Boardwalk.

Head to The Embarcadero downtown waterfront to sightsee along San Diego Bay. Eat a seafood lunch at one of many waterfront restaurants. Take a sightseeing cruise of the harbor or tour historic ships including the Star of India, an 150 year old vessel that is the world’s oldest active sailing ship. Climb aboard the USS Midway Museum to learn to about the 47-year history of one of the longest serving aircraft carriers in the U.S. Rent a bike to explore the numerous walkways and bikeways of The Embarcadero.

Denver, Colorado

The Mile-High City is an incredible destination for lovers of outdoor recreation, urban parks, museums and more. Let kids blow off some steam at City Park, a beautiful greenway with playgrounds, lakes with paddle boats and great places for a picnic.  Visit more than 3,000 animals at the Denver Zoo, consistently rated one of the top Zoos in the country.

If you have older, adventurous kids, head to Confluence Park downtown, home to one of the South Platte River's best kayak shoots. Calmer explorers can relax and wade in the river's shallows, or take a walk or hike on the park's trails. Ride the Denver Trolley or head to the Denver Firefighters Museum, History Colorado Center, or the Children's Museum of Denver at Marisco Campus.

New Orleans
