Theme parks

Disney Land and Universal Resorts are often recognized for offering a wide range of accommodations for guests with disabilities. Here are two more top rated parks for accessibility you may not have considered for your next family vacation:

Sesame Place, Philadelphia and San Diego

Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street? The closest you will get to the real thing is a visit to Sesame Place theme parks. Your little Sesame Street fan will love the water park and dry rides with character themes, including Elmo’s Cloud Chaser and The Count’s Splash Castle. Young and old fans alike will enjoy the full-scale replica of Sesame Street.

In 2018, Sesame Place was the first theme park to earn international recognition as a Certified Autism Center. As a CAC, Sesame Place provides trained staff, a sensory guide to the park, a low sensory room, in addition to hidden disabilities programming.

Guests with disabilities can determine which rides are best for them with the park’s Ride Accessibility Guide . Sesame Place has staff trained to assist visitors with a wide range of services, including providing visual guides and wheelchair access.

Morgan’s Wonderland, San Antonio, Texas

Like all parents, Gordon Hartman wished for his child to make friends and enjoy playing with other children. When Hartman observed kids hesitating to invite his daughter, Morgan, to play water games at a hotel swimming pool, he wanted to create a space where people with and without disabilities could have fun together and better understand each other. A few years later in 2010, Morgan’s Wonderland, the first theme park designed around people with disabilities, was born.

The park was expanded in 2017 to include Morgan’s Inspiration Island, which was named one of the “World’s Greatest Places” by TIME Magazine. All of the park’s attractions were designed to be trademark-rated Ultra-Accessible. “From a wheelchair-accessible Ferris wheel to catch-and-release fishing, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy,” writes Morgan’s Wonderland.

Culture and arts

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, New York is fully wheelchair accessible, with wide galleries, wheelchair accessible restrooms and elevators. The Smithsonian Institution offers specialized tours for people with low vision that allow visitors to explore works through touch and descriptive lectures.

More accessible places to learn about art and history:

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas

Located in Bentonvile, Arkansas, Crystal Bridges is completely wheelchair accessible and accommodates multiple visible and invisible disabilities. The museum offers sign langage interpreted tours and descriptive audio tours. EnChroma glasses are available to visitors with colorblindness.

Zoological and natural areas

Download the zoo’s social stories for people with cognitive disabilities which highlight what visitors can expect at the zoo. The stories include guides with information about quiet areas, educational demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Yosemite National Park and Yellowstone National Park are also known for their accessibility. Yosemite offers a series of paved trails and Yellowstone has accessible walkways leading to natural attractions such as Old Faithful.

Here’s additional spots nature lovers may want to add to their list:
