Travel Insurance Comparison: AllTrips Prime vs. AllTrips Premier

annual travel
Allianz - annual travel

More people are beginning to realize what a great deal an annual travel insurance plan can be. If you’re planning two or more trips in the next 365 days, an AllTrips plan from Allianz Travel Insurance is the easy, affordable way to protect every adventure and enjoy perfect peace of mind.

How does annual travel insurance work? It’s pretty simple. For one flat rate, your AllTrips plan protects every trip for a year: short or long, work or leisure, domestic or international. There’s no limit on the number of trips you can take (although each plan does have a limit for trip length). And you don’t need to notify Allianz Travel Insurance of your travel dates before departing. Your trip is automatically covered as long as your plan is active.

The only challenge is figuring out which annual travel insurance plan is right for you. We’ll compare our most popular plans, AllTrips Prime and AllTrips Premier, to help you choose the best option.

Benefit comparison for the AllTrips Prime plan vs. AllTrips Premier plan

In many ways, AllTrips Prime and AllTrips Premier are similar. Both plans can protect you from major and minor travel mishaps. Both plans include 24-hour assistance and concierge benefits. And both plans include rental car protection (not available for residents of KS, TX, and NY).

The biggest difference is in the benefit limits: the maximum amount your plan can pay for each type of claim. AllTrips Premier offers four tiers of trip cancellation/interruption benefits, going as high as $15,000. AllTrips Prime has a maximum limit of $3,000 for trip cancellation/interruption.

It’s important to look at how those benefit limits are defined, too. With annual travel insurance, post-departure benefit limits are per insured, per trip. Rental car benefits are per rental, per trip.

Trip cancellation and interruption are different. With AllTrips Prime, the maximum benefit limits are per insured, per year. With AllTrips Premier, the maximum benefit limits are per policy, per year.

If your entire household is insured by one AllTrips Premier plan, then everyone on the policy shares the benefit limit.

Which is the best annual travel insurance plan for you?

Answer these questions, and we’ll help you make the right decision.

1. What’s your travel budget?

AllTrips Prime has a fixed $3,000 limit for trip cancellation benefits per insured person, per year. (Trip interruption has the same limit.) This means that:

  • Any trip with more than $3,000 in non-refundable costs won’t be fully covered
  • If you end up filing multiple trip cancellation claims, the total can’t exceed $3,000

So if you’re planning an expensive trip, choose an AllTrips Premier plan with a higher per-year limit for trip cancellation/interruption. But if you’re a budget traveler who’s trying to save money, AllTrips Prime may be the better choice.

2. Are you heading anywhere remote or undeveloped?

One of the biggest differences between AllTrips Prime and AllTrips Premier is the limit on emergency transportation benefits: $100,000 vs. $500,000.

You might think, “Well, there’s no way I’d ever need medical transportation costing half a million dollars.” But it happens! If you have a bad fall while hiking in India’s remote Pangi Valley, or if your car overturns on a mountain road in Kazakhstan, or if you have a stroke while vacationing in Patagonia, your evacuation to the nearest high-quality hospital will probably be very expensive. An overseas medical evacuation will probably not be covered by your U.S. health insurance.

Emergency transportation benefits can pay for a medically necessary evacuation. They also can cover the costs of bringing a friend or family member to your bedside, transporting your dependents home, and bringing you home following a covered injury or illness, whether on a commercial flight, a stretcher flight, or an air ambulance. (See your plan for details and exclusions.)

3. What’s in your suitcase?

Another big difference between AllTrips Prime and AllTrips Premier: the limits on baggage coverage.

AllTrips Prime can reimburse you up to $200 for the purchase of essential items if your bags are delayed and up to $1,000 to replace items if your bags get damaged, lost or stolen. AllTrips Premier raises those limits quite a bit, to $2,000 for baggage delay and for baggage loss, damage, or theft. (Baggage benefit limits are per insured, per trip.)

If you typically travel with expensive things, such as designer clothing or high-end skincare products, you may want a plan with more baggage coverage. Just be sure to save receipts for any purchases, and be aware that the maximum benefit for high-value items (such as watches, jewelry, and electronics) is $500 for both AllTrips Prime and AllTrips Premier.

4. Are you traveling with your family?

AllTrips Premier is the best annual travel insurance plan for family travel. That’s because this plan can protect your entire household all year long, whether you’re traveling together or individually. Choose your maximum limit for trip cancellation/interruption, from $2,000 to $15,000 per year. This limit is shared by everyone in the household who shares the same plan.

AllTrips Prime can also protect multiple travelers (up to 9 people) on the same plan. All insured people must be listed in the plan, and trip cancellation/interruption benefit limits are per person.

One note: If you’re taking just one big family trip, you may prefer to protect it with OneTrip Prime. OneTrip Prime covers kids 17 and under for free when traveling with a parent or grandparent (not available on policies issued to Pennsylvania residents).

5. Are you taking any extra-long trips?

One key difference between AllTrips Prime and AllTrips Premier is the maximum trip length. AllTrips Prime can protect trips up to 45 days, while AllTrips Premier protects trips up to 90 days. So if you’re planning an extended vacation, AllTrips Premier is the best choice for annual travel insurance. For trips longer than 90 days, you’ll need a single-trip plan.

Whichever plan you choose, be sure to read your plan documents carefully so you understand the limits and coverage in your plan.
