Spring is the best time of year to travel to witness flowers come to life in a bright array of colors. From endless lavender fields in the Mediterranean, to cultivated botanical gardens and carpets of wildflowers, here are some of the best places throughout the world to view spring flowers.

Totally for tulips in Holland.

The Netherlands is known for its beautiful tulips and Keukenhof Gardens is one of the best places to view the flower. Open only during eight special weeks every spring, the gardens span 79 acres filled with more than seven million flowers in bloom. Accompanying bright and perfectly formed tulips are daffodils, lilies, roses, irises and more.

Interestingly, you could visit the gardens every year and never have the same experience. The garden is completely replanted with new annuals to prepare for every spring! You can also experience more nature by taking a bike trip to Keukenhof.

When you leave the Keukenhof, take a stroll around the garden’s home city, Lisse. The municipality is filled with neatly cultivated fields of tulips bound for global markets. If you’re in Amsterdam, head to the floating Flower Market on Singel Canal.

In the lowland province of Flevoland, visit the municipality of Noordoostpolder, a fertile area blanketed with commercial tulip fields. Many of the flower farms are open to the public and give tours, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the nation’s floral industry.

Best time to visit: April – May

Smell sweet lavender in France, Italy and Germany.

Head to Provence in the south of France for endless fields of fragrant, purple lavender. It’s very easy to locate the fields but we recommend you rent a car for this journey.

“Drive through Drive through D6 (Route de Manosque) where the road is literally teeming with fields of these beautiful purple flowers,” writes planes, trains and champagne. “If you’re coming from Aix-en-Provence, the Luberon, or Avignon – your first stop after exiting the A51 motorway at Manosque will be field Terraoma.”

There are also full-day, guided tours of the region’s lavender fields.

In Italy, travel to Stura Valley in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Head to the small town of Demonte and let the lavender viewing commence! From there, head down state road 21 between Borgo San Dalmazzo and Colle della Maddalena for endless fields. Lavender cultivation is an important economic resource in this area.

East Westphalia Germany is home to the country’s largest lavender field. Close to Bielefeld, this lavender field of more than 12 acres is located on the grounds of Taoasis, a natural fragrance manufacturer. Before you go, check the blossom cam on the company’s website to time your visit for peak blooms. View the field of flowers from a photo vantage point and stroll through an expansive, curated fragrance garden. Have lunch in the cafe on the grounds.

Best time to visit: Mid-June through July

Go wild for wisteria in Japan.

“Japan’s wisteria tunnels are even more magical than its cherry blossoms,” writes Travel & Leisure.

Wisteria, known as fuji in Japanese, produces gorgeous blossoms. The flowers resemble delicate blue, pink, purple and white lanterns suspended from widespread branches.

The branches are flexible, so they can be formed into large tunnels that literally drip with flowers from above.

Ashikaga Flower Park in Ashikaga city is home to an incredible 350 wisteria trees, including a beloved Great Wisteria tree that is more than 150 years old. While wisteria blooms wow from above, the park's 5,000 azalea bushes are beautiful at ground level. Walk across a wooden bridge spanning a calm stream, under a Kibana tunnel filled with white wisteria blossoms.

Kawachi Wisteria Garden in Kitakyushu is famous for its two wisteria tunnels that converge to form an impressive flower dome, “creating a sea of colors to walk underneath,” writes Travel & Leisure. It’s truly a sight to behold. Due to limited space in the park and its parking lot, reservations are required.

Tennogawa Park in Tsushima is a treasured shared green space, where visitors can view stunning wisteria tunnels for free. Head to the park for the Owari Tsushima Festival, celebrating the wisteria blooming period from the end of April through early may. If you are there after dark, the wisteria trellises are illuminated so you can enjoy the colorful blossoms all evening.

Best time to visit: Late April through early May
