Rose petals and chocolate are nice accessories—but the best romantic getaways are defined by the things you can’t buy. Quiet moments together. Secret smiles. Those electric connections you never forget.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time for a little baecation. Some hotels and resorts offer special couples’ packages; others have special deals and discounts for winter stays. We’ve pulled together a few of our favorite baecation ideas, just for you.

Wait—what is a “baecation?”

It’s a romantic getaway with your bae (aka your boo, sweetie, or honey). There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all baecation. If you’ve only been dating for a short time, this trip might be a test to see how well your travel styles mesh. If you’re unsure about the future of your relationship, a baecation can make everything clearer. And if you’ve been together for decades, a baecation is the perfect trip to reconnect.

When planning your baecation, choose a place that challenges you both to step outside your comfort zone, just a bit. No matter where you go, make sure you protect your trip—and your bae—with travel insurance. Get a quote right now.

If you and your bae don’t mind the cold… go to Finland.

Specifically Lapland, the northernmost part of Finland. Imagine snuggling up in a glass-roofed cabin and watching the northern lights shine overhead. You can also go skiing, get steamy in a sauna, and ride in a sled pulled by reindeer.

The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel offers luxurious suites with views of the surrounding forest and private dinners for two. Turn down the temperature even more at the Arctic SnowHotel. You can dine on ice plates at the Ice Restaurant, have cocktails in ice glasses in the Ice Bar, and sleep in a snow room with carved ice décor.

Other wintry February baecation destinations:

  • Loveland, Colorado is famous for its annual “Marry Me & Ski for Free” mountaintop ceremony, held on Valentine’s Day each year.
  • Stowe, Vermont is a winter wonderland. Even if you don’t ski or snowboard, you and your sweetheart can snowshoe, taste wine, or take a scenic gondola ride.

If you and your bae want to be warm… go to Puerto Rico.

With direct flights from many mainland U.S. cities and no passport required, Puerto Rico is a baecation destination that’s perfect for escaping the cold. Stay in the historic city of San Juan and experience it all: beautiful beaches, live music and dancing, romantic dinners, and shopping.

Or, treat your sweetheart to an unforgettable Valentine’s getaway at one of Puerto Rico’s beach resorts. The Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, is a historic property that offers five-star service and spa treatments based on indigenous traditions. On the less spendy side is Villa Flamenco on the island of Culebra, where the rooms are modest but the beach views are unbeatable.

Other tropical February baecation destinations:

  • The Maldives for impossibly perfect beaches, overwater bungalows and crystal seas
  • Bali for white-sand beaches, ancient temples, and waterfalls

If you and your bae like to party… go to New Orleans.

Valentine’s Day often falls during Carnival season: the weeks between Twelfth Night in January and Lent. (The schedule changes every year; here are upcoming Mardi Gras dates.) During this time, New Orleans hosts dozens of parades and other festivities.

If you’re not into debauchery, just stay off Bourbon Street. There’s plenty to see elsewhere! Some parades are cute, like the Krewe of Barkus’ dogs in costume. Some are quirky, like the Bean Parade’s elaborate bean mosaics. And some are spectacular, like the Black Masking Indians in their hand-beaded costumes.

For a romantic New Orleans baecation, book a stay in the Garden District. The Hotel St. Vincent is a gorgeously moody spot. Reserve a table at an intimate restaurant, like Clancy’s. Then, don your sequins and glitter and catch a parade.

Other festive February baecation destinations:

If you and your bae are looking for luxury, go to Napa Valley.

Don’t want the hassle of an international vacation? California’s Napa Valley is one of the best baecation destinations with luxury resorts in the U.S. While the weather may be cool and rainy in February, you’ll enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds. Plus, it’s mustard season! This is when wild mustard blooms in the vineyards, turning fields to gold.

Auberge du Soleil (“Inn of the Sun”) is a delightful luxury resort option for a couple’s getaway, with 50 guestrooms overlooking olive and oak trees. Ride in a hot air balloon, take a private vineyard tour, and book a couple’s massage at the spa. The historic Indian Springs Calistoga resort is a collection of cottages, bungalows, and Mission Revival-style buildings. At this Napa resort, spa treatments are the big draw: a halotherapy Himalayan salt room, mud rooms, and thermal mineral pools.

Other luxury baecation destinations in the U.S.:

  • Kauaʻi, Hawaii for lush forests, outdoor adventures, and some of the best beaches in the United States
  •  Palm Springs, California for golf, hiking, glamour, and desert romance.

If you and your bae are on a budget… go on a cheap Caribbean cruise.

Last-minute cruise deals are real. You may be able to find a three- or four-night Caribbean cruise for less than $100 per person, per night. There are a few things to keep in mind, however:

  • Cruise deals don’t typically include airfare, alcohol, and other extras.
  • The cheapest cruise fares will be for interior and/or less desirable cabins.
  • The shorter, cheaper cruises often attract a party crowd, which can kill the romantic vibe.
  • Travel insurance for cruises is a must.

Other affordable baecation destinations:

  • The Dominican Republic, which offers some of the cheapest all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean
  • Nicaragua, where you can visit volcanoes, lounge on beaches, and stroll historic towns while spending less than $100 on a night in a hotel and dinner for two.1
